2...How are texts in the three platforms constructed?
How is Super 8 promoted through...?
Super 8 is promoted by broadcasting. This is done by radio shows and television shows which super 8 have featured in many during the period of the films release. This is by having many different trailers as they can be viewed in many different ways to appeal to there audience. Super 8 was sent out by trailer in three different ways which are theatrical trailer to suit the audience who go to watch films, TV trailer for audience who watch TV and the last one was a Interactive Trailer which was viewed through a game called Portal 2, which was viewed by children who like action/adventure games. With Print, broadsheet are made, and stories are in tabloids.
E-media is twitter pages, fan pages, facebook pages and many more. Promoting Super 8 was different to any other type of film as they had viral marketing going on for the film which was a massive hype for the film. The main official page for Super 8 has everything a fan needs. For example, they have video clips, games, extended videos and many more which try and interact fans with the movie.
Print media is shown by reviews of the movie in newspapers and magazine. All the starts of the movie have all had interviews with different shows and people and this is a good way to start of the film being released and to show people a sneak preview of what may be in the movie. It also shows how the movie got its inspiration for example a spin off publication such as comic book. Furthermore, the empire magazine did a featured article on Super 8, on the director J.J Abrams and the producer Steven Spielberg where J.J Abrams got his inspiration from.
All three platforms are presented to all genders and ages. The only difference within it, is how they are being presented, for example, posters, blogs, online websites. They all have a different way to get across to the audience. Online social networks sites are more popular to get across to the audience, due to the fact that nearly everyone uses the interent. Many people have facebook and twitter, so thats why advertising on the net gets futher more quickly.
3..How do audiences access the text across the 3 platforms?
Super 8 main target audience i would have to say would be the family. As we no many children have gone to see this film, and the reasons for this would be.. The movie relates to children as the main characters of the movie are all children. As the movie is also set time back, parents can also relate with their children and may bring back memories.
The way print media is aiming to for this movie is to the older audience. This is because reviews in magazines and newspapers have been created to grab attention for the movie. Steven Spielberg has made many movies before and with the older generation knowing who he is, they would be more excited to read on about his newer movie. This piece of platform has no interaction with the audience only if they was to be reading the reviews in the magazine online. This would be able to give them a chance to write a comment and express how they may feel about the review.
Broadcasting is Television, radio,DVDs and many more. There has been many people visiting the cinema more now then there was ever. Statistically, there are 26 million people who own a television, a TV license and many people go to the cinema. 31 million people approximately visit the cinema. This gives a good chance for Super8 trailers to be shown at cinemas before movies as many people attend the cinema. Its very easy to promote things on television now as many people now have televisions. This makes it easier for movies to be advertised. The super 8 adverts are shown on many different channels, this includes Australian channels too. This is helpful as with it on many channels it could help the movie go global.
4. How are representations constructed across the 3 platforms?
The characters in the movie all have there own way to them, and they are all presented in there own way. J.J Abram’s also discusses that the children in the movie were very fun to work with and they also gave him more inspiration as they made the film set fun to work. But this abandoned all the stereotypes on young people as one of the unreliable, careless, self-entitled, never going to achieve anything. The characters all are able to have many interviews on television, and also take part in movie awards. This movie also overcomes the stereotype that all children that are young are also very lazy. But this movie shows how young children may be responsible and that they can also be a good role model for other young children and this is half the aim of the movie.
5..What institutional issues are raised in the case study?
The company has split the production, promotion and the distribution of the film. This is called vertically integrated. The main institution which is on promotion with Super 8 is Paramount. They revealed the film to their social networking site which reached a high amount of fans. They also gave out tickets online on many different websites which one was the 9/11 website. This brings in new a audience and different backgrounds. There are also games and the prizes which are given are tickets and this interacts audience with a good experience as they are involved in contests and there aim is to try and win these tickets to watch Super 8 free.
